Dyscalculia is a term for persistent, significant difficulty learning and using mathematical skills. Diagnostic manuals generally place it within specific learning disorder or developmental learning disorder with impairment in mathematics. It is not laziness and cannot be inferred from one poor grade.
What is dyscalculia?

Many people with dyscalculia were never diagnosed. As children they were sometimes seen as bad at maths or not trying hard enough, while they were struggling without understanding why it would not sink in.

How is dyscalculia diagnosed?
Dyscalculia falls within specific or developmental learning disorders in current diagnostic frameworks. There is no single quick test or brain scan: assessment pathways and qualified professionals vary by country, age and education system.
- Interview and history: the difficulties with numbers are traced back to childhood, at school and in everyday life.
- Standardised assessment: appropriate tasks evaluate relevant mathematical skills and compare performance with age, schooling and learning opportunities.
- Persistence and impact: the difficulties must be lasting and genuinely get in the way of study, work or daily life.
- Differential diagnosis and context: the assessor considers teaching, language, sensory or neurological conditions, intellectual development, anxiety and conditions such as dyslexia or ADHD.
It is the combination of these elements, not a single bad grade, that grounds the diagnosis.
Dyscalculia and love life
The diagnosis does not determine tenderness, humour or relationship skills. It may affect practical tasks such as splitting a bill or managing a shared budget, but lateness or navigation difficulty should not automatically be attributed to dyscalculia.
